The most popular things to do in the Scottish Borders are Hill Walking, Cycling, Riding, Driving, Fishing and Watching Wildlife. Not many people live in this area and there are only a few small towns, villages and country estates. The area has been at the centre of many historic conflicts between the English and the Scots and also invaders such as the the Romans and Vikings, consequently there are scattered relics from ancient battles. The main areas of flat land are near the coast. Accommodation in the Scottish Borders is mainly self catering holiday cottages, bed and Breakfast or hostels.

Jedburgh Abbey

Jedburgh Abbey is one of the four great abbeys built in Scotlands border country during the Middle Ages. It was established as a priory of Augustinian canons around 1138.

After the defeat of the Earl of Surrey in 1297 at Stirling the abbey was pillaged and wrecked by the English as retribution. Only the shell of this abbey remain now.

Hermitage Castle - Hawick

Hermitage Castle is a semi-ruined castle located in a remote lonely spot in the border region of Scotland. The castle has a reputation both from its history of murders, torture, and treason and its awesome, eerie appearance, to be one of the most sinister and atmospheric castles in Scotland.

Floors Castle is a monster of a place, it’s huge. Visitors can explore the grand rooms, fine art, porcelain, tapestries and see the superb views over the River Tweed toward the Cheviot Hills.  

Lochcarron of Scotland Visitor Centre

With over 500 Tartans they have the largest collection in the world.

 The visitor centre runs a guided tour of the mill Monday to Thursday.  You are shown all aspects of production from spinning the yarn to the finished article. Afterwards, you can relax with a cup of coffee and a home baked scone in the coffee shop. You will also be able to spend a little time in the shop browsing through the knitwear that you have seen made in the mill.

Robert Small's Printing Works - Innerleithen

Robert Small's Printing Works in Innerleithen is an Industrial Heritage museum operating a fully functional Victorian era letterpress printing works. The museum demonstrates to visitors how a local printer would produce stationery around 1900. Visitors are given a one-hour tour showing the various stages of the process as well as a chance to try hand typesetting, and at certain times the opportunity to print their own work.

Abbotsford - Melrose

This was the home of Sir Walter Scott. Sir Walter Scott was a fantastic novelist who created works such as ‘Rob Roy’, ‘Ivanhoe’ and ‘Waverly’. The house has a beautiful setting near the banks of the River Tweed. Visitors can explore the house, browse the gift shop and dine in the restaurant.

Go Ape - Glentress Forest, Near Edinburgh - is a network of rope bridges, trapezes, tunnels and some new zip wires that stretches for roughly 1000 metres through the tree canopy.
