Old Blacksmiths Shop - Gretna Green

The Famous Blacksmiths Shop is the ancient building that made Gretna Green famous and has stood in Gretna Green since 1712. It was also one of the earliest destinations for runaway couples fleeing to marry in Gretna Green. In 1754 a change of law in England made it illegal for people under 18 to be married if parents objected. However, in Scotland this law did not apply and boys could marry at 14, girls at 12.

Almost anyone had the authority to conduct a marriage ceremony as long as there were two witnesses. Consequently, this led to young couples running off to Gretna Green, one of the nearest villages across the border, to get married. Gretna Greens Blacksmiths shop is the iconic location for these 'irregular marriages'.

Laggan Outdoor Activity Centre

Laggan Outdoor Activity Centre has a range of fun activities that includes an 820 metre double line zip wire that allows two people to 'zip' at the same time, next to one another.
